URGENT NEED: ALL BLOOD TYPES NEEDED
July 9, 2024
The Community Blood Center (CBC) is currently experiencing a critical shortage of blood. Urgent appeals are being made to all eligible and healthy donors to schedule a donation as soon as possible. In the past three days alone, our community hospitals have faced multiple instances where blood was needed in large quantities due to motorcycle and motor vehicle accidents. Over 200 blood products were transfused, severely depleting our local blood reserves.
This recent surge in demand has exacerbated an already challenging situation, especially during the summer months—a period traditionally difficult for maintaining adequate blood supplies. It is crucial to restore our blood inventory to a stable level to ensure that we can meet the ongoing and unforeseen needs of patients in our community.
John Hagins, President & CEO of The Community Blood Center, emphasizes the critical role of donors in saving lives: “We have an emergency situation. The blood already donated over the past week is what saved lives in these emergencies. When accidents occur and mass transfusions are necessary, it’s our previous donors who ensure that patients receive the blood they urgently require. A consistent and reliable blood supply is essential for responding swiftly to medical emergencies, and achieving this depends entirely on the support of our community. Now is the time to replenish the blood that was needed over the weekend.”
CBC urges all community members to prioritize making a blood donation immediately. All blood types are urgently needed, and there is a particularly high demand for platelets. Whether you are considering donating for the first time, resuming regular donations, or starting your summer by making a life-saving contribution, your action can make a significant impact.
