Severe weather and the need for blood

May 31, 2024

Reports of severe weather throughout the nation continue as ABC News has stated it’s been “The most active spring in the U.S. for severe weather in 13 years…” following the deadly storms that passed through multiple states over Memorial Day weekend, including Texas and Oklahoma.

These storms led to the activation of the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps (BERC), a network of blood centers across the nation who, on a rotating “on-call” schedule, commit to collecting extra units of blood in case of a mass transfusion disaster, like a mass shooting or natural disaster.

While The Community Blood Center (CBC) was not on call during this activation, it serves as a reminder of the importance of a reliable blood supply which can only be accomplished through the dedication and generosity of volunteer blood donors. CBC has been on-call for multiple BERC activations including the devastating tornadoes that struck several midwestern and southern states in December 2021.

CBC is encouraging all eligible blood donors to schedule a blood donation and make donating blood a regular part of their routine. This helps CBC be prepared for both expected blood needs in the community like cancer care and routine surgery, as well as unexpected needs like traumas and other emergency situations, both here at home and throughout the nation.

CBC is proud to be a part of BERC to ensure victims of critical-need scenarios and disasters can receive the blood they need.

All eligible blood donors are urged to donate as CBC has an urgent need for Type A and O blood and is currently on-call for BERC.
